One of the major expenses when planning your wedding is the food cost. Many couples are not pleasantly surprised after the chat with a planner or caterer and get realistic figures. However, there are ways to cut the costs for food and still have an amazing wedding!
- Cocktail reception – A variety of heavy hors d’oeuvres and creative cocktails can often do the trick. Along with tray-passed hors d’ouevres, try having a variety of food stations to really add some excitement. You save the cost of a full, formal meal but your guests still get a taste of some fine food and drink. Seal in the vibe even further with lounge seating (bar tables, comfy couches and the like) instead of the usual tables.
- Afternoon tea – For a low-key, but elegant affair have an early afternoon wedding followed by a tea reception. Seat everyone at tables and offer a variety of loose-leaf teas with platters of scones, finger sandwiches, biscuits and more. Some wine or champagne wouldn’t hurt either (no need for a full bar). Set the scene even further with a pianist or harpist playing soft tunes in the background.
- Breakfast or brunch – Morning meals are typically less expensive than dinner and, because people tend to drink less in the morning, you also save bar costs. Have a morning ceremony followed by a wedding breakfast. You can certainly do a sit-down meal, but I love having fun with stations – omelets, bagels, waffles and so much more. And, of course, mimosa or Bloody Mary bars are always a hit. Just bear in mind that it will likely be difficult to entice the crowd to dance early in the day.
- Dessert reception – Go this route if you’re willing to start your wedding at 7 p.m. or later (you don’t want hangry guests!). You can get creative with crepes, ice cream sundaes, a variety of coffees and, of course, cake. Champagne, dessert wine or other libations might even get your guests up and dancing.
